Integrated Municipal Information System (IMIS)
Sustainable human waste management is needed to address water scarcity
The Integrated Municipal Information System (IMIS) is a comprehensive solution aimed at catalyzing the City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) initiative and contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 with emphasis on 6.2. This innovative system brings together web, mobile, and geographic information technologies, built on top of open-source software, to provide local government decision-makers with a powerful tool for effective planning, management, monitoring, and evaluation of sanitation systems and services. IMIS offers aided geo-spatial visualizations and serves as a data repository, streamlining the sanitation value chain and advancing the goal of CWIS.
IMIS enables authorities to perform three crucial functions to enhance municipal services and improve accountability. These include:
- Tracking progress and performance through customizable dashboard indicators and information.
- Managing services through a linkage between FSM and mobile apps, allowing service providers to record service applications, delivery, and receive customer feedback in real-time.
- Implementing geo-spatial based planning and investment strategies to support informed decision-making and service delivery.

Overall, IMIS provides a comprehensive and efficient platform to support the effective management of municipal services, enhance accountability, and streamline the planning and delivery of services, which include, but not limited to:
- real-time information to both decision-makers and citizens, without requiring expertise in geographic information systems.
- rapid and efficient production of maps of affected areas during emergency situations, e.g. locate critical infrastructure, determine the resources and personnel needed for a response.
- enabling local governments to engage with citizens and improve their participation in data collection and decision-making. For instance, IMIS can be used to gather building information and containment types from users, solicit feedback on municipal services, and provide citizens with access to information on government services.
- facilitating collaboration between government departments and other stakeholders, making it a valuable tool for advancing local government initiatives.
The IMIS Landscape provides a comprehensive set of features and tools to support City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation efforts. It includes a Municipal CWIS and GIS database, tools for strategic sanitation planning, including infrastructure assessment, intervention strategy, and investment planning, streamlined business processes along the sanitation value chain, a near real-time monitoring dashboard for evaluating the CWIS system and services, and an adaptable system that can integrate with external data sources such as tax payments, digital payment systems, emergency response, and other spatial data sources. This integrated approach to managing municipal sanitation efforts offers a powerful tool for decision-makers and stakeholders.
